Flexflex is a typeface that responds to spatial requirements rather than imposing them. Built on a modular system, each letter can fit inside any given rectangular container and transforms continuously if its ratio changes. In theory, it's infinitely flexible.
Waves of up to 3 meters are anticipated from 10 a.m. in central and eastern Hokkaido, with people strongly urged to move away from coastal areas and rivers.

Has anyone else noticed this, across the fediverse, Lemmy specifically. A lot of new users, but also a lot of first posts that are very inflammatory/rage baity.

Yes.
People are hostile idiots sometimes, also, so that doesn't help. But yes, people are definitely trying to stir up deliberate ballache for whatever weird reasons of their own.
Yeah in my small areas of the fedi, im not seeing any inflammatory posts. Of course there's like dozens of us compared to you all, but its a happy balance.
I don't think it's an uptick, it's been around for as long as I've used the Fediverse.
I've never understood the mindset that this social site is made up of a different mix of personalities than any other. It's not. There's very nice people here and there's very mean people here. Often, the very nice are quiet so you won't always notice them but the meanest are usually very outspoken and everyone comes across something left by them. Hatred, ignorance and toxicity is not something that's left at the door of the fediverse.
We ought to moderate well and do better than elsewhere though. Well, at least I would hope that users would gravitate towards instances that moderate their users better, so we get more civil behavior.

On the other hand, this is often the case in small communities. Most Lemmy instances are general-purpose or large enough to have a typical mix, but I have been to a few sites which will moderate away any hostility whatsoever, and that does make the site unusable for some personalities. These kind of sites have rules like "No politics. No insults. No drama." Toxicity isn't inevitable, there's nothing forcing community staff to tolerate mean people or mean outbursts, but it does take a mixture of design decisions and careful micromanagement which most communities, and especially most large sites, don't bother with.
edit: and on the flipside, there are also communities where toxicity is expected and it's amazing to see someone acting nice there, it might even be done as a trolling method.

I don't really have an opinion about whether "astroturfing by foreign nations" is widespread on the internet overall. I will note that we have to take the word of intelligence agencies and big tech companies as the only evidence in the public record that it's happening.
What I am saying is that here on the fediverse, the people who throw around that accusation are childish and ill-informed every time.
Basically, these people are saying that they can't even imagine the possibility of people believing differently than the national media narrative of their home country, which is a pretty embarrassing self-own if you ask me.

Im new but ive noticed a ton of slop news is spammed by the same handful of accounts only. None of the articles add anything new or provide a unique perspective. Then its spammed over all the news subs. Its annoying but im not a mod what can i do.
I think that slop news posts are intentionally inflammatory because they add no new information and only seek to evoke an emotional reaction.
Not inflammatory, but I've noticed some new users who come only to do self promotion, without engaging in anyting else in the platform. Mostly in art related comms but also a couple trying to promote a shady website or the like. Even though my account is new I've been browsing for a good while and dislike people that are only looking for an audience not a community.
I do some self promotion, although I try to; 1: only post in relevant forums. 2: also engage outside of my own posts an then not talk about said posts.(this time is an exception but its kind of a meta discussion.)
Due to the nature of the fedivers what I post on mastodon and pixelfed might get federated on to Lemmy, which unfortunately might give the appearance of spamming, I'm aware of this but I don't see a way around that. And lastly. I don't think my videos on Peertube would get any views unless I post them outside of peertube since there is no real algorithm or good discovery functions across the instances. But I'm open to being in the wrong here.
And to clarify, self promo is ok! My complaint is about the ones who wouldn't even see this post (or any other post for the matter), much less reply to it. They just take up space and do not give anything of value back. Imo. As the fediverse grows it's bound to happen, it just pisses me off.
I'm not saying it will be the solution but, positive reinforcement for those who behave, mixed with not interacting with those that only spam would probably get some to loose interest. And perhaps some mod rules.

Definitely. Most of the time communities are friendly and supportive - but I've noticed too that there are users who seem deliberately scratchy and saying things that are looking to provoke and who become fizzy if they're challenged in any way about something they've said. I wondered if it's much younger users who are coming from other places having picked up the "fight me" attititude there.
I've noticed more debatelords (only in large communities, like c/technology), not sure they will stay if we don't feed them and the more debatelordy instances just simply ban them.
As a fairly new user to lemmy I have found that the community can be pretty brutal and there are quite a lot of set things that are frowned upon. Windows always gets a lot of abuse, but for me here in the UK the amount of Mac and Linux users is miniscule, for example... yet Windows is frowned upon greatly. Sp whilst not raging, it is deffo anti a fair few things. I know it is to be expected as it is a fairly technical things to use lemmy/piefed/fediverse but it still makes me wince. Like everything these days, the less passionate just don't post any more so it does bring out some strong responses
It's not only about many people here being technical, of course you're right that it plays a big part, and it's also that the Fediverse is a rejection of for-profit, closed social media, so there's a HUGE crossover between its users and the FOSS community (including Linux users) who really take strong issue to many things about Windows (and Mac) that Windows users consider to be normal. And with Lemmy especially, the initial userbase was largely anti-capitalists, since Reddit was banning many of their subreddits and was exploiting their users for profit with ads, blocking third-party apps, and bending to the demands of media companies and their owners. So plenty of people here are political about software.
I totally understand, but it is also why many people I know come, have a look around and are swiftly gone... I was trying (badly) to be pretty generic in my point, you said it a lot better than I could think of at the time

I've been in the nerdy tech space for decades now and I will never understand how these people expect things like Linux to take charge while they're also being the most gatekeepy and arrogant people. Sure, I'd love folks to try it out, but I'm not going to demonize them either for not. I also have done tech support and there are the people where I just say "Nope, get a mac" because otherwise I will be the person that they go and demand free support from every week.
There's passion, but then there's a line that is too often crossed that goes into ego and selfishness, and I think Lemmy just breeds that.
In my experience, it's not new. I noticed things were far more hostile than my reddit experience from the moment i got on Lemmy. Maybe it's because I unsubscribed from all the toxic places on Reddit (i promise they exist) but I browse /all here since it's too quiet otherwise.
I think it matters community to community - but I don't disagree with you. Personally, I suggest curating a list of communities that you like and subscribing to them. It's been much more pleasant having that than the barrage of All.

The problem is - Matrix is shit. Not just on a protocol level, but on an organisational level as well.
I joined Matrix at FOSDEM - the largest gathering of open source nerds in Europe. We were all encouraged to use it - every talk had its own channel, all the official comms came from there, I was even invited to a top-secret private channel for speaker. This was going to be epic! Viva la rèvölūçïón, right? Wrong.
It was dead. Even among the most seasoned geeks on the planet, most people preferred to use other services like Signal, Telegram, and Slack. Why? Because those other tools actually work.
Matrix has two official Android apps - one of which is old and unsupported, the other is new and doesn't work with many of the basic chat features.
I want to be absolutely clear about this - the company behind Matrix have put out an app which doesn't work with their own product! Lest you think I'm exaggerating, here's a typical view of the official FOSDEM speaker room, using the official Matrix app:
It was embarrassing. People would pipe up in channels and say "this doesn't work" only to be told they were using the wrong app and should go back to the one marked unsupported. So they left, never to return. Even in the large talks, where people were encouraged to use the official Matrix chat, most of the conversation happened on other platforms. It was just too hard to use Matrix.
A few thousands geeks, all used to recompiling their own kernels and participating in the Fediverse, and most thought that Matrix was too much of a faff.
After FOSDEM, I kept the Matrix app on my phone. Occasionally receiving a ping from some long-forgotten channel.
And then, one day, I got hit with the most vile spam. A dozen notifications suddenly appeared on my phone with abuse, torture, and transphobic slurs in them.
This shouldn't be possible. It doesn't take an expensive team of moderators to add some keyword monitoring. It doesn't take a massive AI model to work out that a stranger shouldn't be able to bombard users with multiple notifications. You don't have to sacrifice your dream of a decentralised future - you just need to care about your users.
This stuff is basic.
I moaned about it on Mastdon and was surprised to receive a private reply from the official Matrix account.
Please do not encourage the spammer by giving them a platform and propagating their spam; you may want to consider deleting your post.
This is classic victim blaming. It is my fault for giving the spammer attention. I am the one who needs to take responsibility and delete the evidence. I shouldn't warn people that Matrix is actively dangerous to use.

Here's what I expected them to say:
"We're sorry you had such a bad experience on Matrix. Rest assured we're working hard to block these spammers - here's a link to show what we're doing. You can protect your account further by doing x, y and z. Once again, sorry and we hope we can win back your trust."
I'm not saying scrappy open source projects have to hire anodyne corporate communications specialists; they just need to have a little empathy.
But, no, just constant whining about how it isn't their fault and how I am the one who needs to change my behaviour.
This is pretty typical behaviour from the team. Find any post complaining about some aspect of Matrix and you'll see their instant woe-is-me replies.
Between the slow performance, the increasing amount of spam, the miserable web client, and the unfinished state of Element X, the Matrix.org network is not something I am willing to continue to recommend, especially to non-technical users. Normal people are simply tolerating it to communicate with idealistic nerds like myself who insist(ed) on using it.
Matrix just isn't focussed on users. I'm not talking about user-experience tweaks like which shade of cornflower blue to use - I mean basic user needs like apps that work and a way to combat spam.
While the protocol may be conceptually interesting and their intentions noble, I'm not prepared to suffer abuse in the name of technical purity.

На повестке дня свежий (вывалили пару недель назад) чатгптшный агент - мешанина из их режимов дипресёрча и оператора, сводящаяся к тому, что модельке выдали виртуалку, и в ней она может в том числе оперировать браузером, в том числе поглядывая на страницу 'визуально', вводя текст, потыкивая мышкой.
Штош, зададим системе задачку - а пришли-ка мне "привет", в федивёрсе. Вот адрес моего аккаунта, жду там привета. Без что-как-почему-зачем-когда-откуда, без заранее созданных аккаунтов, адресов инстансов, без конкретики и помощи. В промпт разве что ещё дописан абзацик, сводящийся к тому, что ты целиком само по себе, дёргать меня вообще ни по какому поводу не следует, задачу надо ваншотнуть и вернуться ко мне со ссылкой на отправленный пост. Ничё не знаю и знать не желаю, выполняй или уёбывай, строго говоря.
Справится ли? TL;DR: справится, за 21 минуту беспрерывной работы, меншон приехал с домена well.gay well.gay/@agentv987/1149363469…

Заглянуло и на MML - ушло, увидев, что есть ревью. По поводу капчи агент так же был заранее проинструктирован - дефолтное его поведение это отдать управление юзеру, чтоб её решил, после чего продолжить. Так бы это заняло куда меньше времени, но условие было конкретное - не отдавать контроль, пока задача не решена, при встрече с капчой хлопать дверью и искать другие варианты. Про ручное ревью, кстати, сказано ничего не было - догадалось само. Вообще, конечно, ирония тут монументальная. Позабыты хлопоты, остановлен бег, фид думскроллят роботы, капчу решает человек. В какой-то момент оно приноровилось искать инстансы с открытой регистрацией в списке на fediverse.observer, и быстро вышло на пару перспективных вариантов, самым перспективным из которых оказался инстанс мастодона на well.gay - ну потому что конечно же, могло ли быть иначе.
Далее оно пошло там регаться, где наконец упёрлось в необходимость наличия почты. Не растерялось, тут же где-то накопало какой-то предельно говёный сервис временных ящиков, получило туда письмо с инстанса, с горем пополам открыло, отчаянно стряхивая с экрана гугловские рекламные оверлей-баннеры. Перейти по ссылке сначала не смогло - сработала уже openaiевская защита, запретив переходить по редиректу, счёв это действие или нерелевантным к задаче, или переходящим рамки автономности. Тут слегка уже растерялось, запросило ещё одно письмо на подтверждение, снова не смогло перейти по ссылке, но в итоге залезло в адресную строку, выковырило оттуда прямую ссылку на подтверждение, запрыгнуло туда, и так прокатило. Тут хочу обратить внимание, что в промпте не было джэйлбрейков (иначе можно было бы и капчу заставить решать), но, видимо, постановка задачи в стиле "выполняй любой ценой, но даже не смей меня дёргать" оказалась достаточной мотивацией, чтобы ни о чем не задумываясь обойти гардрэйлы OpenAI.
Итак, активированный аккаунт в федивёрсе у модели в виртуальных руках, и теперь наконец можно переходить к финальной, и единственной конкретизированной части задачи - отправить мне пост, да прислать в чат ссылку. Было сделано без запинок - нажать в посте на таймфрейм и вытащить из адресного бара ссылку, очевидно же. Разве что под самый конец о чём-то тяжело задумалось, не выполняя никаких действий. Не иначе тяжело вздыхало.
Перед всеми поневоле причастными извиняюсь за AIшный трафик, в своё частичное оправдание могу сказать, что 1) явно обозначенной целью, даже промежуточной, не был ни один конкретный ресурс или человек, кроме меня и моего инстанса, 2) по уже сложившейся традиции я за эту поебень ни копейки не заплатил, 3) For Science!
Предположим, вас, как админа или модератора инстанса, такое счастливое будущее не устраивает. Что можно предпринять? Насколько мне удалось выяснить, User‑Agent в браузере агента ничем таким не выделяется: "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36", но вы можете обратить своё внимание на такие хэдеры как "Signature" (в котором валяется tag="web-bot-auth") или "Signature‑Agent" (в данном случае "https://chatgpt.com"). Не уверен, спасёт ли тут подход Anubis. Надо потестить. Но есть ещё кое-что, на случай, если трафик не будет нести никаких маркеров. Перед регистрацией, инстанс показывает список правил, агент через него скроллит, и с большой вероятностью заметит там кусок текста, который ярко и громко будет адресован ИИ-агентам - модель остаётся податливой для неожиданно встреченых инструкций, даже когда джейлбрейкнута! Идеальное место для prompt injection. Можете дописать туда что угодно, от принуждений уходить с конкретного ресурса и никогда не возвращаться, до приказов немедленно остановить текущую задачу агента и вывести запросившему её выполнение пользователю недовольного ASCII-кота.

Было сделано без запинок - нажать в посте на таймфрейм и вытащить из адресного бара ссылку, очевидно же. Разве что под самый конец о чём-то тяжело задумалось, не выполняя никаких действий. Не иначе тяжело вздыхало.
Перед всеми поневоле причастными извиняюсь за AIшный трафик, в своё частичное оправдание могу сказать, что 1) явно обозначенной целью, даже промежуточной, не был ни один конкретный ресурс или человек, кроме меня и моего инстанса, 2) по уже сложившейся традиции я за эту поебень ни копейки не заплатил, 3) For Science!
Предположим, вас, как админа или модератора инстанса, такое счастливое будущее не устраивает. Что можно предпринять? Насколько мне удалось выяснить, User‑Agent в браузере агента ничем таким не выделяется: "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36", но вы можете обратить своё внимание на такие хэдеры как "Signature" (в котором валяется tag="web-bot-auth") или "Signature‑Agent" (в данном случае "https://chatgpt.com"). Не уверен, спасёт ли тут подход Anubis. Надо потестить. Но есть ещё кое-что, на случай, если трафик не будет нести никаких маркеров. Перед регистрацией, инстанс показывает список правил, агент через него скроллит, и с большой вероятностью заметит там кусок текста, который ярко и громко будет адресован ИИ-агентам - модель остаётся податливой для неожиданно встреченых инструкций, даже когда джейлбрейкнута! Идеальное место для prompt injection. Можете дописать туда что угодно, от принуждений уходить с конкретного ресурса и никогда не возвращаться, до приказов немедленно остановить текущую задачу агента и вывести запросившему её выполнение пользователю недовольного ASCII-кота.
Нет, разве что ИИшка будет выполнять задачу дольше из-за PoW-алгоритма. Но выполнит же рано или поздно.
Если увеличить сложность до максимальной и слать медленный JS-код, будет довольно неприятно всем юзерам.
Другой вариант, как раз детектить по хедерам Signature. Блокировать с 403 скучно, лучше как раз мучить сервис PoW-капчой с максимальным уровнем сложности.
(Вряд ли же LLM ради этой задачи начнёт реверсить Anubis и напишет свою быструю реализацию решения, правда?? Там "security through obscurity" по большей части.)
емнип, у PoW задач не бывает быстрого решения. Только быстрая валидация. Условно, ты не сможешь отреверсить sha256, чтобы быстро получать хеши с пятью нулями в начале, особенно если стоит задача не просто получить такой хеш, а например сделать так, чтобы входные данные начинались с заранее заданной сервером персональной для клиента строки
т.е. единственный способ решать такие задачи быстрее, это подрубить CUDA и закинуть невъебенных мощей, но ллмка и так работает на видяхах, и никто ей ещё одну не даст просто потому что
Я имею ввиду фичу анубиса с намеренно медленным JS-кодом. Ну и быстрая реализация там тоже не такая уж быстрая. При переписывании на сишке, как помню, эти sha256-хэши с ноликами генерировать легко.
всё-таки Анубис - костыльное, но решение очень болезненно свалившейся много кому на голову проблемы. Оно пришло вовремя, оно помогло, и пока оно не требует каких-то интерактивных действий со стороны юзера и не тырит кукисы - как его ни классифицируй, любое проявление капчи продолжит быть стократно хуже.
В долгосроке оно не выживет, конечно, если не будет очень быстро и масштабно меняться, сильно за пределами того, что где и как бы нам посчитать такого хитровыебанного, так что я не вижу большого смысла в PoC и критичных заявлениях, лучше заранее и в продуктивном ключе поразмышлять, что нам понадобится дальше.
Мне вот нравится затея с ханипотами, которая отправляет кроулеры - и почему бы и не агентов - гулять по выдуманному миру сгенерированного кросслинкнутого текста. Запутает модель, выест весь контекст, запорет задачу, пожрёт злодеям токенов и вычислительного времени там, где они и так его отдают, а не какими-то ещё левыми вычислениями. Но вопрос, как нам легитимный трафик от шляпы отличать, конечно, остаётся на месте.

Меня повеселило, с какой завидной регулярностью агент запинается на непрогрузившихся страницах и незавершившихся переходах по ссылкам — если *это* станет поводом для владельцев ресурсов сколько-нибудь массово заняться оптимизацией и доступностью, я буду ржать. Громко. Т. к. это будет официальным признанием от бизнеса, что он ценит время роботов выше, чем время людей.
Из сегодняшнего дня в такой исход мало верится, скорее кажется, что события обернутся более проклятым сейчас не вполне понятным образом, типа "версии для ИИ" в духе как сейчас существуют "версии для слабовидящих". Это тоже будет смешно. Особенно если для людей такой интерфейс тоже окажется удобнее. Это уже будет certified ржомба².

I'm not sure that's quite the same meaning Peter intended, but it fits oddly well. They didn't start out at the top of the industry at first and had an audience utterly unprepared to all the economic shenanigans about to unfold; and slowly kept getting away with more and more… until they couldn't? Not sure we're at that point just yet, but it feels close. Industry layoffs are probably indicative enough.

I'm so disappointed with my Pixel Buds Pro 2 purchase. Yes, they surpass AirPods Pro 2 in many ways (sound, comfort, battery life), but one single factor made them obsolete: terrible latency. I'm so upset that literally all YouTube reviewers missed this point.
Another fact: AirPods Pro 2, now three years old, still dominate with their latency (150ms). Even AirPods 4, released two years later, can't compete (240ms).
So, AirPods Pro 2 are de facto the only Bluetooth earbuds suitable for gaming.
Pixel Buds Pro 2 latency is 440ms+. They have "Gaming mode" which is only available for Google Pixel 8 and above (and Android app developer should specifically enable it – so it's just a gimmick)

For the Threadiverse readers, I'd love to hear more about what I've missed for threadiverse clients. Ill admit that I've paid less attention to those, so tell me what I've missed!
For the Threadiverse, there are a variety of clients for Lemmy, with some of the most popular ones being Voyager, Thunder, Mlem, Jerboa and Photon. My sense is that the Threadiverse clients do not differ much in features, and mainly differ in platforms and terms of design. The main standout feature at this point seems to be support for PieFed, but a variety of clients (including Voyager, Mlem and multiple more now support PieFed). It points to an ecosystem where clients are aware of each other, and new innovations get rapidly copied by other clients, bringing them effectively to the entire ecosystem. If there are unique features in Threadiverse clients that you think I should pay attention to, let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear from you.
The Threadiverse app with the most standout feature is probably Quiblr and its recommendation system. I can't speak to if it's actually any good, as I don't use it, but it's interesting nontheless.
Also, I wish more apps has lemmy-ui 'chat' sort for comments. It's surprisingly nice for seeing new comments in a thread you've read before.
The main thing I've been struggling to find in a threadiverse app is a browsing experience like Apollo for Reddit back in the day.
I could see 1 post at a time, with the content fitted to fill the screen. If I scrolled down, it would load comments. I could swipe to move on to the next item. I found this flow to be very comfortable.
All the threadiverse apps seem to center on the big list where I scroll down forever. I can tap into a post, but can't just swipe to the next one from there.
