Again: I understand the appeal. I really, really do. Raytracing is a genuinely awesome technology, and I do think it should be used more often.
But within there, there's also temptation to make everything glossy to show the tech off.
We've already been there, with bump/normalmapping. Which is a great effect if used subtly. But the devs had to push it to the limit. You remember, the time when everything had to be bumpy and - oh yeah - glossy, as if someone painted the walls and floors with vegetable oil. Which made certain parts of games like Stalker, for example, unbearable to look at, it looked very, very cheap and unnatural. Same thing with your blooms and HDRs. We toned this down a bit since, thankfully, but we have new toys to overuse now!

You've probably heard me yap enough by now about videogame graphics being in diminishing returns and how technology is no replacement for art direction and level design. And ah, shit, here we go again.
the vertical lights in particular raise questions. Are these actually light sources that routinely shine directly in people's faces? Is this a casual interrogation room or something? With earlier technology it was at least muted enough to not be table to tell if it's a light source for the room or it's just machinery and it's glowing subtly. It wouldn't be raising questions if it was subtle. But it isn't.

Those are regular tube lights. Which are bright, of course. I have one of these.
But they're NOT as bright as to be brighter than goddamn SUN, judging by the second screenshot.
The first one was more accurate about how such lights would work. They're bright *to look at* yeah, but they illuminate the room pretty dimly, unless there's a freaking battery of them.
I still do not recall ever seeing such tube lights mounted vertically anywhere near eye level, they're always either on desk lamps or overhead, never somewhere you directly look at on a regular basis.
I suppose there might be some variations of these tube lights for use in different environments, including some seriously bright models as seen on the right. I don't really know, but at least I don't get any immediate disbelief from that.
But placement of these lights to me gives off "hostile architecture" impression, along the lines of spikes on park benches. Which could work as a worldbuilding detail that ties into the game universe. But Black Mesa itself has no history of such disposition towards its employees, nor prior to the incident anyway. And I don't suppose the teams behind these Remixes think they can alter the lore?
Freeman as voiced by Ross would probably bring up procurement screwing up and contractors never questioning the mismatch between the papers and the boxes.
