Some older automatic washing machines used metal punched cards to control their wash cycles and offer more choice over programmes. The cards were placed in a slot on the machine – a top row of smaller perforations was used to pull the card along and as the card advanced, the different holes triggered switches to control wash, rinse and spin cycles.
These examples for Voss washing machines were kindly donated by my friend Thomas.

Tomatoes are coming in! 🍅✨
The neighboring gardener gave us some heirloom tomato seedlings, and the grape tomatoes were grown from the seeds of the supermarket ones we’ve been eating! They’re all growing wild this summer. Tomatoes love it hot n dry!
👆🍅 I had to pick some of the large ones because they were weighing down the plants too much. I underestimated them to grow so big so fast. I didn’t have the support structures ready.
Other recent haul from #gardenPlot14. I only grow what grows well without much effort* in my plot.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
🇨🇿 Czech Republic is now OPPOSED to Chat Control, as announced by Prime Minister Petr Fiala:
"On behalf of myself and the entire TOGETHER coalition, I want to say clearly: we will not allow the monitoring of citizens' private correspondence. We do not agree that any emails or messages on platforms such as WhatsApp or Messenger can be monitored. Protecting our children is important, but we have to do it differently."
This now leaves eight undecided member states.

Crowdbucks sounds interesting, but is extremely light on details. How does it work? Are all payments going to go through Stripe? Is it going to support GnuTaler? Crypto maybe? Is it to be integrated into things like Mastodon, Peertube, and other fediverse services?

So, yes, we are looking at making CrowdBucks work with Taler.

Interesting. I run a Threadiverse client on iOS and Android. I haven’t run into any issues with Google, yet.
Apple has this rule I had to comply with:
- You must be able to delete your account from the app
- Lemmy delete account via the API requires password entry, even if you’re already logged in
- Apple however, claims password entry is too much friction for the user to delete their account
- A workaround is to link out to Lemmy website to delete your account. Even if you have to enter your password on the website, in Apple’s mind, this is somehow allowed despite being more friction?
I get the sense Apple wrote these rules to improve user experience, and they’re applied without anyone really considering what effect they’re having on the UX.

Hey by the way do you know how to check how many cups were made with it?
Since I see it only in UA/RU videos I'll probably tell for the curiosity of any reader.
1. You need to completely power off the machine
2. Hold top left (on/off) and top right (steam) buttons and then power on. Wait for two blinks of top lights. You're ready to see the numbers.
- hold middle left (single small cup) - to see the number of cups
- hold top right (steam) - to see the number of litres
- hold middle bottom (descaling) - to see how many descalings happened before
The top lights blink from right to left each led corresponding to 1-9, tenth, hundreds and thousands
To exit this mode just power off the machine with a back switch for 5 seconds.

A Fediverse Permaculture
From Survival to Abundance: How Fediverse Permaculture Can Save Your Instance
(Article by Steven Tree Baxter)
Another Fediverse instance just vanished—swallowed by the familiar spiral of desperate donation drives and dwindling support. Will yours be next?
Fediverse permaculture offers a bold alternative: instead of living in fear of collapse, admins and developers can build resilient, self-reinforcing ecosystems where every interaction strengthens the whole. The goal? A mutually beneficial cooperative, designed to thrive through change.
How It Works: A Self-Sustaining Ecosystem
1. Merch & Artisan Creations
Users don’t just donate—they invest in the community. A merch buyer gains a tangible symbol of their support, while the instance earns funds to cover costs. Handmade goods and creative projects foster connection, celebrate talent, and turn supporters into active participants.
2. Community Events & Collaborative Projects
From virtual workshops to co-created content, these initiatives generate value while reinforcing bonds. Users contribute skills, time, or resources, and the instance gains both financial and social capital.
3. Niche Communities & Multilingual Support
Diversity is strength. By welcoming sub-instances, specialized groups, and multilingual users, you create a richer, more adaptive ecosystem. The message is clear: "You have a place with us!"
Permaculture Principles in Action
Permaculture Principle | Fediverse Application | Outcome |
---|---|---|
Observe and interact | Monitor instance health, user activity, and trends | Spot early signs of stress or opportunity |
Catch and store energy | Collect donations, host merch, offer premium content | Build a financial buffer for stability |
Obtain a yield | Develop sustainable content, events, or services | Deliver value while generating resources |
Apply self-regulation | Review engagement and governance policies | Continuously improve and adapt |
Use renewable resources | Leverage volunteers, open-source tools, and shared knowledge | Reduce costs and empower the community |
Produce no waste | Recycle content, reuse ideas, share code | Maximize impact, minimize redundancy |
Why This Works: Flipping Fear into Opportunity
Fediverse permaculture replaces anxiety with action. Instead of waiting for donations to dry up or users to leave, you create a system where:
- Every purchase, contribution, or collaboration strengthens the whole.
- Artisans, creators, and volunteers become stakeholders in the instance’s success.
- Diversity and adaptability turn challenges into opportunities.
The result? An instance that doesn’t just survive—it thrives as a hub of creativity, commerce, and shared identity.
Your Call to Action: Design for Abundance
- Identify Mutual-Benefit Loops
Start small: merch, micro-donations, or volunteer-driven projects. Every loop you create reinforces the ecosystem. - Embrace Diversity
Welcome niche communities, multilingual users, and sub-instances. The more voices, the richer the soil for growth. "You have a place with us!" - Apply Permaculture Principles
Observe, adapt, and iterate. What works? What doesn’t? Let the community guide you. - Celebrate Creativity
Reward artisans, creators, and contributors. Their work isn’t just content—it’s the lifeblood of your instance. - Collaborate & Share
Connect with other instances. Build a network of resilient ecosystems, where success is collective and shared.
The Choice Is Yours
The question is no longer "Can we survive?" but "How will we thrive?"
Fediverse permaculture is your path from fear to abundance. Take the first step. Watch your community bloom—and join a movement where everyone wins.
Let’s Discuss!
- What permaculture principles have you applied to your instance?
- What challenges have you faced in building a sustainable community?
- Share your ideas and experiences below!
