Pipkin. Dude, Pipkin. Just look at her. She looks *just* like our Menace, who is just about the cutest and sweetest bean *ever*. 🥺

Calling #Denver area, someone please adopt her and her sisters. There are also a bunch of other #rats and #mice at shelters all over the area right now. They're such good companion critters.

We're at full occupancy, and the presence of girl rats would make our boy rats, uh, lose their mild and cool temperament.

Adopt a shelter pet!

chat, what do i have to do to docker so that apt-get doesn't time out when i have working ipv6 on the host?

There are some moderation actions you can do from a different instance, I'm not sure which ones don't work or if they've all been fixed

You should create an account on a different instance and appoint yourself as moderator, at least for times when you don't want to get on VPN, like using an app on your phone

I think they are saying it occurred on lemmings.world but they are referring to a post on lemmy.world, possibly put there to get more viewers. Not sure what is blocked from the U.K. fully, but posting it to lemmings wouldn't help U.K. people see it if they are blocked there. Could be the logic.

Video friendly communities for news, etc.?

It seems like all the biggest comms prohibit posting videos. I'm mostly talking about news, world news, etc. at lemmy.world... What are the biggest comms or instances that allow posting videos? I enjoy reading but I also enjoy watching and posting videos. Thanks!

I don't think there is one, because Lemmy is mainly based on text and images, and will need tons of extra space and bandwidth for an instance to support videos.
в ответ на Rose56

OP seems to be talking about posting videos which I imagine are links instead of uploading videos.

Wouldn't that solve the whole storage issue?

Just received an email from feddit.online saying they've geoblocked UK IPs due to the Online Safety Act

I’m confused, why are non-UK instances banning UK users? Are their admins located in the UK? Is anyone afraid of being extradited to UK because of their local laws? Do you block Saudi Arabia too because you can’t guarantee blasphemy laws are going to be upholded?

They believe that Ofcom could pressure their hosts to cut their services off if they don't comply with the act, or believe they could be fined.

How would that even work in another country? Wouldn’t Saudi Arabia pressure hosts for breaking blasphemy laws?

Saudi Arabia has no soft power here. UK does.

Not saying that UK will here (I think they won't), but the relationship dynamics are a bit different.

Saudi Arabia has plenty of soft and hard power too. Possibly more so than UK. I think we’re getting overly dramatic. UK doesn’t have enough pull to start extraditing thousands of people for not complying with their weirdo laws.

Not when it comes to tech. You think the USA would let Saudi Arabia force the total shut-down of a USA-based site because they allowed people to make fun of Islam? Come on. Saudi Arabia just quiety blocks sites.

UK doesn’t have enough pull to start extraditing thousands of people for not complying with their weirdo laws.

I agree with you there too. The forum owners here fear Ofcom pressuring their hosts to force compliance, not extradition. I think its misguided and unlikely (especially for small arms of the fediverse) but it is what it is.

в ответ на misk

A public enforcement action by Ofcom could make it difficult because payment processors can refuse to work with the site owner, domain registrars could be pressured to suspend the domain, and hosting providers might refuse to provide services.

Who needs this drama?

I think in practice Ofcom would just geoblock your site specifically.

As a sidenote, I remember that UK has an odd and ancient "law" stating something in the lines "The Crown must not be offended" (i.e. being anti-monarchy and advocating for the end of monarchy, even without any violent language/means but a pacific defense of anti-monarchy). I couldn't find it, nor I can remember the exact phrasing, but such a "law" threatens prison time for those who "dare" to "offend" the crowniness of UK Crown. Also, I'm not sure to what extent this law is applied in practice.

Even though I'm Brazilian (so the UK supposedly "have no power over here", and I say it with the Gandalf's voice), I see these international situations with some worry: there are needed laws (such as laws against noise pollution) and there are laws whose reach ends up going way too far from their "seemingly well-intentioned" puritan scope (such as the aforementioned laws).

If countries are capable of passing draconian laws against their own citizens, don't expect that those same countries couldn't go further to impose these laws beyond their own lawns, especially in times of interconnectedness.

And Fediverse platforms from everywhere around the entire globe end up being caught in the crossfire, due to that same interconnectedness.

In the end of the day, the world is increasingly bleaker, as the history is being repeated (maxims "One thing people can learn from history books is that people can't learn from history books", and "history doesn't just repeat, it rhymes").

Given there's an active pro-republican campaign site I'd wager not at all.

UK against the USA? I think the UK isn't winning that.

I think treason laws have only been used against people who were actually plotting to or attempting to murder the monarch.

The Treason Felony Act of 1848. Nothing odd about it. That used to be quite standard. Actually, the years of 1848/49 saw many major revolutions and hard fighting across the continent.

as per the article general_effort posted:

The act – which makes it a criminal offence, punishable by life imprisonment, to advocate abolition of the monarchy in print, even by peaceful means – has not been deployed in a prosecution since 1879.

Its one of those laws that are on the books mostly becuase no one has got around to modifying it and removing the bits that are unused.

Ain't had no job to pass a bad law for their citizens. Now our chaps have to use VPN to come and talk with us! It's sad!

Just a thought on social media type of things.

So I like to call the grouping as the federation but for me it mainly means the things aggregating communities. So the reddit like experience but then there is mastadon which is twitter like. Anyway I often think about the whole thing like going to a bar, or a club, or basically any type of thing where you hang out. You have places you regularly like to hang at which are the subscritpions, you have places you hate and you block those, then you sometimes just go whereever to see whats out there which is like scrolling all. So I was trying to think what mastadon would be like and I was thinking it was like going to someones party because the host is not a group or location so much as an individual. There is no real question here just a musing I felt like sharing.

The issue with Mastodon, and pretty much most of the fediverse is that the non techy people do NOT want to choose a server, they just want something to work....\
Once you throw in a lot of the positives us people see, it turns it into a negative for them, they have no need or want for decentralisation and they simply don't sign up.
в ответ на HubertManne

Facebook = the old bar that pretty much everybody used to go to, you know the one where the bar person tells everybody your business and there is always someone trying to sell you stuff...\
Mastodon is that new place in town, but most people don't go really. It's cheap, nobody tells you what to do but most fo your mates still don't go there...\
X is that club that's loud, people shouting all the time, trying to get your attention. It's where you go if you want a wild night and break a few rules

в ответ на INeedMana

And why not join it with your fediverse account just like you can access Trello with your GAMMA* account?

redshift не нравится это.

в ответ на suoko

Ah, you mean for fediverse to work as an LDAP?

My point is
Let's imagine we have a board on some instance. You use your account on another instance to ask the owner of the board to give you access to the board.
The contents of the board are, IMO in most cases of such boards, "members only". So any changes happening inside should not be sent out to federating instances. Otherwise, privacy of such boards would be at the mercy of privacy of other instances. If restricted changes were sent out, technically speaking, any server it federates to can choose to show that content to everyone.
Which means you won't be able to access the contents via any other instance. Apart from the logging in part, you will still need to go to the instance hosting the board.
Unless it would be for publicly accessible boards only, like codeberg issues. That use-case could work

в ответ на suoko

Nice!

How come Lemmy rarely shows up in internet search results?

I'm curious as to why Lemmy rarely shows up in search results on the main internet even if there is a post related to the search input. I've only ever seen a Lemmy result if Lemmy is specified. Is this because we're still relatively small or some other reason?
в ответ на countrypunk

From an SEO perspective, federation looks almost exactly the same as spam unfortunately. A bunch of websites with very similar content that all link to each other but aren’t linked to externally very much.

Yes, you need people. But I'd say Reddit has too many people. The Ethernal September problem: sometimes, small is better.
в ответ на Scrollone

The thing with Reddit is that it got too big and political. It was open before but yet still fun a decade ago.
в ответ на ayyy

Yes, it hurts discoverability. How can you have a community without people?

I'd like to ask it the other way around: How many people would it need until you'd say "Yep, that's a community alright."?

в ответ на ayyy

This person gets it! After I launched my website/blog it showed up immediately on google, even though it's content is directly pulled from my Lemmy instance. Which has been running much longer than the site, and cannot be found using search engines.
в ответ на countrypunk

Depends on the search engine you use. I started giving Kagi a try and it has options to increase visibility of fediverse content in your searches.

I'd guess it's a mix of fediverse being a poor fit for ad-oriented SEO and relatively low adoption.

Fediverse Report – #126 - selling music albums on Bandwagon and more

  • Music sharing platform Bandwagon adds the ability for artists to sell albums, create paid channels for exclusive content, and announces upcoming premium subscription tier for artists
  • @Bonfire Social is getting close to release, and team already working on other features as well
  • some good articles on what its like to be a moderator, and the impact of LLMs on small communities on the fediverse
в ответ на wisdomchicken

Bandwagon Premier launches at the end of the year, selling albums will only be available for this premium subscription tier of $10/month.

This is kinda stupid? I don't see anyone wanting to use this. If you don't sell anything, you still have to pay. Also, as time passes, your older releases are sold less. If you don't release anything new in a while, it makes little sense to keep being subscribed until your next release. Fees are way better, especially for small / little known artists. I think it makes more sense to host some free stuff here for advertisement, and then post a link to your Bandcamp in your profile to let people buy there, because their model is better.

Yeah... I'm not sure that's a good monetization model... I feel like even the standard taking a small cut of every transaction is a better idea than that :/

It feels really overly punishing for small artists while being very reasonable for established larger artists, which sucks

The Fediverse is what social media should be

Haven't posted these in a while, but there's not much change:
Since @heiseonline has left #X/ #Twitter, we've seen a bit more #traffic from #Mastodon; #Bluesky is also growing a bit. #Threads lags.

There was an error in our numbers of #Flipboard, after correction, it's way bigger. @fediverse

I was surprised about this ratio (and the fact that it seems to work for them), too.
I could imagine that a large percentage of lurkers and a maybe more reasonable community than other platforms could be helping factors?

My mastodon account is on a kind of small instance, and I'd love to be able to report posts directly to the originating instance, without also reporting it to "my" admin. I just don't wasn't then to waste their time locally blocking a clear spam account, that should (and usually will be) removed by the originating instance in a couple hours.

в ответ на dubbel

I am afraid, that removal of spam account does not necessarily federate to another instance. On Mastodon activities federate mainly to instances an account, which made/edited/deleted the post, is followed from. (Or an instance can subscribe to relay, which exchanges all activities between all participating instances).

Report always landing to your admin may be something good in light of this...

в ответ на db0

Yea wtf? That seems insanely low. There's no way they can keep up with all content right? At least they can only be reactionary right, like when reports are made?
в ответ на db0

That's why i prefer being mod there. On any lemmy/mbin/piefed instance, we can scale our mod team based on community's topic and its subcriber.

If the community is political/news...we increase our team. On chill community, 3 mods is enough. And if there is more users than we can add news mods.

So when i read this paper, i'm afraid of burning out, i don't know how they manage it. They only manage repport i guess ?

Kinda fucked up that this person moderated hate posts only to find the child predators posting images of their kids on a different forum.

Don't know about you, but whenever I see hate groups specifically targeting children, I think the intention is very clear. Not just spreading hate, but also wanting to act on one of the socially forbidden sex acts as well.
