So, I don't know why I am doing this, but I was reading "Log Off" by Katherine Cross more carefully, after a short discussion here, and here. It seemed to me a good idea to have a post dedicated to this, and possibly in the future if this works out, about other books. The book is dense, and highly relevant to Lemmy and broadly Fediverse culture, and it spells out nicely some things I had thought before, but in much more packed and well thought-out way. I found myself highlighting something on virtually every page. So I guess I would like to post my thoughts on these highlights and see what other folks think about those as well. So here goes. I am posting the quotes as separate comments to this post, to facilitate them being discussed more thoroughly.
This myth of social media’s indispensability to our movements, not just as a tool but as the forum for change, is dangerous. If we internalize it too deeply, it actually demobilizes our movements, lulling us into mistaking quote-tweet wars and “clapbacks” for meaningful political action, seducing us into seeing nanoseconds of digital catharsis as an adequate substitute for change. It seduces us into mistaking the profitable content we generate for truly resistive speech — as well as tying our worth and our success, as people and activists, to the engagement metrics created by large tech corporations.
Social media is chock-a-block with political content, hashtag activism, and disinformation that turns grandparents into fascists. How could it be anti-political? Because it demobilizes and scatters the polity; it makes it much harder to come together, deliberate, and effect change in our communities. Worse, social media tricks us into thinking that that’s exactly what we’re doing. What results is a “public square” where real people can get hurt but nothing ever really changes.
One thing I firmly believe is that arguing on the internet is 100% pointless and never accomplishes anything. We are too alienated and isolated and atomized on the internet to ever truly reach someone else across the gap of ideology and prejudice, everything bounces off because we're all just strings of text on a screen. Every debate is another random encounter in the posting RPG. Rather than a public square, it's a mob farm for exp.
I think online spaces can still be useful, but conflict is entirely useless. It's just for fun.
And I will never be able to convince you otherwise! I could say that I think there are other factors which made you change your mind, give examples from my own evolution from anarchism to Marxism, we can trade replies back and forth for hours or days, ect etc
I don't even know if it is about conflict per se, or the very notion that it is virtuous to engage with these media politically. Even these alternative platforms, because they are modeled after Twitter, Reddit, and the like, possess the same qualities, by making us react and respond to similar ways. I guess digital infrastructure for activist groups should be more similar to private infrastructures of orgs rather than corporate social media. And they should be community first, with a sophisticated take on the channels available to communicate to and from the organization and the rest of the community.
Until some time ago, I was still on the fence about Lemmy though. On the technical level it has some desirable attributes in the community structure and federation, that could possibly help. But the user culture, me included, is so fucked up that only with insane levels of moderation it could ever fulfill such a purpose. For this another medium should be considered in Lemmy's place (I don't think Mastodon is the one either), that would constrain antisocial and non-social user behavior on the technical level. So, this is a loose argument that Lemmy and Mastodon are not tools for social change, and should be abandoned as such.
I think the format promotes conflict. Lemmy ultimately is made to be Reddit-like, so we shouldn't be surprised when it produces Reddit user culture. Ultimately we need an entirely new format that promotes cooperation over conflict.
As for moderators, I also think the volunteer model is bad. They do important work and should be compensated for their labor.
First and foremost, one of the ugliest side effects of terminal COVID-posting that proliferated amongst the Extremely Online was a deepening mistrust of their fellow human being; every time they fell for outrage-bait about some wanker being a dick about not wearing a mask, their inevitable response was, “I don’t trust people anymore!” This is a neat fit for conservatives, whose entire movement is built on a notion of Original Sin, developed through two centuries of monarchism, fascism, nativism, and lesser varieties of know-nothingism, that treats strangers as essentially threats. But for anyone to the left of Mussolini, such contempt for your fellow human being, such unwillingness to reach out to one’s neighbour for fear they’ll be like That Bitch from Panera Bread I Saw on TikTok, is extraordinarily dangerous — and fatal to realizing the ideals we share, which are necessarily collective.
Incredibly bad take. How one can look at the global negligence of COVID prevention, which I remind is a novel, highly-transmissible neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure, and conclude that it is actually bizarre and antisocial to care about it, that it is playing into conservative ideology to have trust issues from the immense trauma of navigating said global negligence as one cares about it, is beyond me. I treat people who are not doing anything to prevent the spread of COVID as a threat because they are. As it turns out, that's a majority of the world population right now. We are all living the "if everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?" scenario in real-time. Don't blame me for not jumping with you.

Negligence of COVID prevention is important. To me, trans equality rights are important. And a score of other not only important but critical topics, from climate change to ableist structural eugenics.
But by dunking on each other in places like these, even if Lemmy / Mastodon is not corporate, achieves nothing. Your comment does nothing. My comment does nothing.
We had this mentality passed on from corporate social media, and it is just wrong to think that our posting achieves anything good the internet has to offer, to activism or otherwise. This is the true message of the quote, and not minimizing the importance of any macro-, structural, systemic topic.
That said, for those still grasping with the notion of weaponized sincerity, the above comment is the more fine specimen of it.

You asked for discussion about the quotes you posted, and I gave it to you. I am not sure what's weaponized about my sincerity but it is, indeed, quite sincere.
But the worst people in the Valley also thrive on all the demobilizing disengagement that their platforms have slowly led us towards. They have alchemized activism into toxic Twitter beefs and seduced us into thinking that we’re one viral campaign away from solving some massive socio-structural problem, which makes it all the easier to devote our energies to pursuing these digital white whales in lieu of more tangible goals in our lives and communities.

Правительство РФ утвердило правила централизованного управления Рунетом. Минцифры, Роскомнадзор и ФСБ смогут вводить режим фильтрации трафика, блокировок и временной изоляции российского интернета при кибератаках и сбоях.
Новые правила не вводят принципиально новых полномочий, но уточняют порядок взаимодействия ведомств и операторов связи, а также определяют более чёткий регламент действий в кризисных ситуациях.
Точно такие же правила уже действуют сроком до конца февраля 2026 года.
К слову, все окрестные шаманы хором говорят - не бери китайца.

интересно, что эти охуительные истории я читал ещё 15 лет назад слово в слово, с поправкой на то, что китайцы были дешевле всех. Но судя по составу автопарка на дорогах, подавляющая масса сограждан решение о покупке принимает явно не на основе этих историй.

На замену подрулевого блока ушло 3 дня по 2 часа и 65к (из которых около 15к на удалённое шаманство для прописывания то ли борткомпутера в девайс, то ли девайса в борткомпутер), раньше это решалось за 15-20к и 1.5 часа. На ТО - около 30к.

I have been thinking a lot lately about latency...
The world I grew up in expected real time interactions. My parents, teachers, classmates, etc... They all expected everyone around them to be aware of how everyone feels, and react appropriately in real time.
I have extreme anxiety when a problem can't be discussed and addressed immediately. But, I also have high latency. I need to process, and that takes time.
I'm terrified of that, because for so many years I wasn't allowed time to process.
To me, autism feels like a combination of two root differences in how a brain works.
First, less filtering. Our brains take in a staggering amount of information, constantly! Some can easily ignore all the noise, and some of us can't. That extra information can be very useful. It isn't all actually noise, but the effort to find the useful information gets harder and harder the more you take in.
Second, less "instinct" driven behaviour. Many things that seem completely automatic, even instinctual, for others requires conscious effort and thought and focus for autistic people.
The problem then is latency.
It isn't that we can't do these same things. We just can't do it instantly, because it isn't automatic and built in. It takes focus and effort. It takes motivation. It takes time.
Any time my wife and I have an argument, I am desperate to address in NOW... But, she can't. She shuts down and needs to be alone and quiet so she can process.
I have learned to give her this, and I usually manage to. It is torture for me though... But, I am starting to see that I need it too. I need to process.
I just need to learn to be okay with needing that, and to let myself have that time... That's not going to be easy.
Realizing this also makes me want to be more patient with my kids, especially my 14 yo. They haven't been conditioned as much as I have to feel the need to act in real time. Much of their world is trying to force them to, and I shouldn't be part of that. I need to make sure they know they can take their time, especially with me.
My mom loved to respond to requests with "life isn't fair."
I hated that. It felt so dismissive. It is true, but that doesn't mean you have no responsibility to help. It means it is more important to.
Life isn't fair. Our brains are all different. We can categorize and find commonalities, but every one of us is experiencing this existence in a unique way.
So, maybe try to do what you can to make life a little bit more fair.

Fediverse projects are maturing and adoption of them is trending up. I'm excited for the further development of the underlying technologies as well as the apps being built to leverage those technologies into even more integrated, user-friendly experiences.
With any developing tech, small annoyances are found and ultimately patched or worked around. It's to be expected that no user experience is ever perfect, even for matured ecosystems. Typically, some smaller annoyances are tolerated when balanced with the overall utility and usefulness of the tech.
One of the issues I've noticed (and I'm sure I'm not the first or only), is that when posts are relevant enough that the OP decides to cross-post into multiple communities, the comments and engagement stays with each community post leading to separate conversations.
The existance of separate conversations itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. Maybe you post a recipe for Pot Roast in a general cooking community and also a community that helps refine recipes to improve them. It may be that the two separate conversations make more sense as the nature of discourse is focused on two different aspects of the content posted. If they were combined, it would be more difficult to sift through chatter to get at the discussion you were looking for.
This concept is true for different communities as well as different instances. Maybe the Pot Roast recipe conversation generated on lemmy.carnivores is substantly different from the conversation at lemmy.vegan-curious and the existance of both is bolstered by the cultures and seneabilities of the different instance/communities. That could create usefull and/or thoughtful discourse that maybe wouldn't have happened if everyone was mixed together and talking past each other.
However, there are plenty of informative posts attached to very similar communities on a given instance as well as posted to mirror-communities across separate instances. Each individual post is a separate entity and i find myself jumping in to different conversations of the same content to see what's being said in each. In addition to general replies often asking the same questions across all of the posts, unique engagement is diffuse and not connecting.
I imagine that an OP would have trouble keeping up with all of these different interactions and likely defaulting to paying their attention to only one or two while the remaining posts are left to fend for themselves. Even if the OP stayed on top of them all, I assume they'd often have to answer the same questions multiple times.

What is the solution to myriad and diffuse conversations around cross-posts? Is there a way to handle this situation thru lemmy-ettiquette or does it require a technological solution?
Maybe we handle it thru culture and expectation. If the decided upon method was to post once and then link that post to other communities for exposure, maybe that funnels everyone into one post to interact (when that's what OP wants).
Is there a software solution on the app developer level that combines like posts together? Is it a protocol level solution thats required? Maybe something that allows a single post to essentially 'tag' different communities for exposure, while only posting once? Can we associate posts to an individual user rather than associating the post to a community, so all replies come to the user post rather than in a community?
I don't know what the solution looks like and I'm not savvy enough to understand the protocol/software side to know if any of my examples are realistic. I also don't know if this is an issue for anyone else, or at least one that lemmy-ites actuallly care about enough to try and solve.
Does anyone know if work is being done to address this? Am I focusing on something that is simply not a priority? I welcome your thoughts.

Different conversations in different moods and cultures on the same subject are something completely human and normal, and tech should not work to undo this. When we have seen tech undo this is with social media silos, after all.
Which is to say, any "solution" that integrates those conversations into one view should be, where possible, client-side only. That way I can opt in to view some conversations as unified or not, depending on eg.: how well do I know the context, or whether the OP is a person known for cross-posting (and to where), while at the same time not forcing everyone else to have their culture of conversation subsumed into essentially an attempt to make topical subreddits.
Getting different perspectives from different circles instead of being migrated to one dominant website culture is a big part of why I haven’t moved to piefed, since it seems like that semi-forced centralization is part of their vision.

As mentioned in this thread already, piefed consolidates all the comments for crossposts when it detects them. As an example, you can look at this post on piefed.social. The link I shared is for the post on !news@lemmy.world, but below it you can see comments from the same article posted in !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk as well as !world@lemmy.world in their own sections as you keep scrolling. So, problem solved, right? Well...
One of the key phrases I used above is "when it detects them". So, how does piefed detect crossposts? The answer is pretty simple, it basically just looks for other posts that point to the same destination url. In the example I linked, that would be the Guardian article that is being discussed. This is the same way that lemmy detects crossposts. This approach is nice and easy and computationally cheap on the database (quick), however, there is a big shortfall of this method...posts that don't point to a url (discussion posts) can never be detected as crossposts. Lemmy offers the ability to hit the crosspost button on a discussion post and it will create a big block quote of the original post for you, but it isn't actually recognized as a crosspost in the software.
I don't have a good technical solution to be able to make discussion posts (and other non-url posts, like piefed events or polls) be crossposted properly. It likely would need to be tracked in the database somehow, but it would rely on users somehow indicating that the post they are making is meant to be a crosspost. I don't know really...
Anyway, that is the current state of crossposts. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
What I think would be interesting would be to have communities be tags rather than exclusive categories. So if you make a post, you can add more than one tag to it, provided you are a 'member' of those tags.
Tags would have moderators much like communities have moderators now, to preserve the meaning of the tag. So you could have a tag like 'billionaire media', and members could slap that tag on all nyt, wapo, etc articles. Moderators would boot members who misapplied the tag.
Then what would be interesting would be to use the tags for searches, like 'news' minus 'billiionaire media'.
Pretty significant changes from what lemmy is today, so would be either a fork of lemmy or a from scratch new program.
The solution has been, for decades, to dump the WWW and continue the Memex-Dynabook-Xanadu line of development where everything related is webbed together by default.

Respondents here have mentioned that Piefed and Lemmy list cross-posts in places, sometimes in the community listing, sometimes in the post itself.
That's missing the point, which is that the conversations should be combined.
Take it a step further, though. You shouldn't have to combine posts, they should all be the same post.
So how do we get there? Both Piefed and Lemmy do this internally, and don't expose this to other instances. NodeBB (aka me) is hoping to explore this question and put in the protocol research to make this a reality. I'll be working together with members of the Forum and Threaded Discussions Working Group about these things. (forum-wg@community.nodebb.org)
The issue (as usual) is buy-in from Lemmy and Piefed (and don't forget mbin!) We all have to move in lockstep so that nobody gets left behind.
We've only just started discussions on how this might work, but hopefully we'll be able to make this a reality soon.

После Робокопа наконец сдунул пыль со своей коллекции игр по Star Wars, приобрёл как-то выгодно (сколько стоило уж и не вспомню, но меньше 400-500р это уж точно). Немецкие телеканалы очень любят снимать документальные фильмы. Для документальных фильмов нужны не только герои-очевидцы, но и эксперты, могущие объяснить немецкому зрителю, о чем, собственно, речь. За последние три года мне приходилось участвовать в съемках фильмов про олигархов, про двадцатилетие президентского правления, про десятилетие Сочинской олимпиады. А недавно телеканал ARD (тот, с которого наше ОРТ слизало своё оформление чуть более, чем полностью) снимал фильм о российских 90-ых. Вышел он в эфир 3 ноября, так что теперь мою часть разговора можно публиковать полностью. Обращу внимание на пейзажную съемку на пруду, создающую романтическую и несколько размытую картинку в духе Борисова-Мусатова, а также на некоторую долю лирических воспоминаний в самой беседе. The issue for me was #devenv package being broken in the latest nixpkgs-stable release (github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issue…). It turns out ghidra build results are not used to determine the package status and the possibility to commit the new version to master branch.
I think this tool is a game changer, especially if you use nixpkgs-unstable

I don't know whether use of AI gen tools for generating code is ethical, it's honestly so nuanced of an issue that I don't have my own fully formed opinion on that matter.
But seeing the #keepassxc drama, I'll note few things: - All AI assisted PRs I've seen on that repo were indeed followed by review and often many edits from maintainer to make those PRs acceptable, confirming maintainer's words that they put them to same if not bigger scrutiny than creature made contributions. This is far from "AI slop" some try to paint it as. - Lack of transparency claims seem to be baseless, there was no attempt to hide the fact there are AI assisted contributions to the repository. - The PR handling of the issue by maintainers of KeePassXC is bad. They likely don't have experience dealing with this kind of social issue. Though seeing fedi reactionaries, the "remember the human" rule of treating creatures with respect or at the very least giving them the benefit of doubt is violated by social media mob rather than KeePass devs. As usual, some social media creatures feel enabled to use passive-aggressive or straight up rude/offensive language simply because they feel they have moral high ground.
Was the use of AI assisted tools in creation of KeePassXC a security issue? Personally I doubt, however I don't feel equipped enough to answer this question.
I'll probably keep using KeePassXC though with a bit more scrutiny from now on, having a look at the repository from time to time.
