Как-то хочется где-то в глубине души тешить себя надеждой на такую хотя бы теоретическую возможность - если наступит совсем окончательный и необратимый ппц - собраться и пробраться к соседям по глухомани, это тяжело, но реально. Но вот если они будут после всего пережитого ещё и обратно заворачивать, это уже совсем какой-то беспросвет, получается.

I wanted to post this question in a neutral community and not the specific Lemmy or Piefed ones.
I am curious to learn how resource utilization is comparing in the real world operation of Piefed vs. Lemmy instances, given a similar level of users and user activity? Considering that Piefed is written in Python and Lemmy is written in Rust, I would think that the difference would be significant, but I recall someone mentioning in the past that the main resource constraint for both these platforms would be database-related instead so the language choice wouldn't have much impact. I'm curious if this is proving correct in the real world as opposed to in theory.
I know that there are a few admins out there who are running both and I would love to hear their thoughts on this.
I can't find/remember the post but recently an admin shared some resource usage graphs. The thing that jumped out at me was their Lemmy instance was using 32 GB of ram while their PieFed instance was using 2 GB of ram. Maybe a little more, but it was low single digits.
Maybe their piefed graph did not include postgresql, which should be 2 GB just by itself... That would bring the total up to around 4 or 5 GB. piefed.social uses between 4 and 5 GB, too.
Thanks. Wouldn't that depend a lot on user demand at the time this was measured? If the Lemmy instance was handling 20x as many users at that time it might explain much larger RAM usage, for example.
This is why I was hoping to be able to compare for similar levels of users. If Lemmy requires 32 GB for 200 users and Piefed requires 2 GB for 10 users, it could still be that Lemmy was more efficient.
Yes, it's tricky. I don't remember which instance it was but it was one of the smaller lemmy instances with roughly the same MAU as Piefed.social, tho. Not any of the top 6 Lemmy instances.
It could have been an outlier. Looks like lemmy.mods4ever.com is much more reasonable although that's a single-user instance so it's going to be the absolute minimum.
I run a personal lemmy instance and two personal piefed instances, so I was just doing some comparisons. My instances are mainly used for development and testing, so they are only subscribed to a handful of communities and just have one active user.
You are correct that when it comes to performance, like snappiness and responsiveness, the database is probably going to be the bottleneck. Unless you are scaling up to a huge degree, I would be surprised to see meaningful differences in the number of requests that could be handled due to language differences between rust and python. Yes, python is an interpreted language, but most of the libraries you are using are basically calling other system libraries written in a language like C, and the program can execute way faster than your database I/O can give it data to process anyway.
Here is my usage summary. The lemmy instance has been running for about 1.5 years while the piefed instance has been running for just shy of a year now. I have only included the memory usage and disk since I don't think either is really CPU hungry or bound in my use case.

Do you mean at smaller scales? I've read many articles in the past that say that some languages for web application servers perform better / require less resources for the same performance than others but maybe it makes more difference at larger scales.

So what's stopping you from doing the same? It's not expensive. Is it that discord is free and you don't actually want to see what stupid shit you wrote about a video game 20 years ago? That seems the most likely explanation. If not, be the change. It's not hard, it's not expensive, you literally just need to want to do it and read a tutorial maybe.

They are working on it, the leas dev is working with the lead Dev of slidge to propose a new Spaces protocol to enable "sub-channel" type functionality.
So you know they are miles behind slack. I say this as a XMPP operator and enthusiast, with a grade A server in XMPP Providers. There's no use hiding the truth.
I say XMPP below as that's what I'm most familiar with, but you can replace it with Matrix or any other open federated network 😀

It's complicated. I agree that copying the UX of the proprietary apps to provide a familiar experience would help get some adoption. That way we don't have to convince someone to switch network and user experience at the same time.
If we had an XMPP-based Discord clone, WhatsApp clone, Telegram clone etc., all interoperating with XMPP under the hood, I think it would be much easier to go to each friend and get them to switch to the clone of the service they like the most. And, everyone could still talk to each other no matter what UI they were using.
I think the reason why Conversations is so successful, compared to other clients, is that it started essentially as a clone of Hangouts.

There's the problem, though. Developers are never going to agree on a single solution 😀
There are limited numbers of developers really familiar with the nuts and bolts of XMPP, and they are already swamped maintaining the existing software.
I think this can be solved though by separating the UI from the backend as much as possible. If experienced XMPP devs work on libraries, and experienced UI devs work on replicating proprietary UIs, someone can then wire whatever frontend and backend together that they want.
I think this can get you 80% of the way there. The last 20% will be challenging though, as you won't be able to replicate the UX exactly: the experience you want to provide will clash with the way the existing network already works.
::: spoiler examples of network differences For example, XMPP has the concept of anonymous public rooms, where you can't see someone's identifier. Most public rooms are set up like this. You can't start an encrypted conversation with someone from a group without exchanging jids first.
But, someone who's used to WhatsApp will expect to just be able to click on someone in a group chat to start an encrypted conversation with them. That's just not possible in XMPP, in the already existing rooms. So, although the UI will look the same, there will definitely still be confusion around the edges.
Likewise, WhatsApp expects everyone to be contactable by phone number. But, if you have a friend who signed up to XMPP using a discord-like app, the phone number won't be their primary identifier. So users could get confused why they cannot contact their friend when they thought that using this WhatsApp clone would work the same way. :::
So, in some ways, it's cleaner to just provide a completely different experience and say "this is what XMPP is".
What I'm not sure about, is how important that last 20% is. On one hand, a user might like that the app seems to function like one they're used to. But then, I can see them having less patience and saying "this is broken" in the areas it doesn't work like they expect. I feel they are likely to be less forgiving about the bits that aren't the same, if everything else is a replica. And, they won't understand the nuance that it's more difficult to have a consistent experience across different clients and servers, they will just say "this app is broken and I'm going back to the proprietary one".
Meanwhile, the status quo, where we say "you have to switch networks and also learn how XMPP differs from everything else at the same time" has its own problems, because people just do not feel comfortable changing so many things at once. So long story short, it's tricky 😀

I know it's not what your asking but I never used Discord because it's proprietary and, my friends and I stayed on IRC.
Now IRC is usually just text but we wanted something a bit more modern so we settled for The Lounge. It's a web IRC client that can display and host videos and images. It can also keep some of the channels history. It brings some modernity to IRC, as we can paste images directly onto a channel.
There's another similar client called Convos. Apparently it can also do video/voice chat but I never tried.
So I'm not sure we'd switch to an XMPP based protocol, as IRC web clients pretty much just already works for us instead of Discord.
The problem with replacing Discord isn't the tech or features. Discord doesn't do anything special that hasn't existed in other software for 15-20 years.
The key difficulty is overcoming the network effect. All the big streamers use Discord, which means their millions of viewers are going to use Discord also, which means that most of their friends will too, and thus, you have a default app that almost everybody uses.
It took a massive amount of effort for me to just get three of my friends to sign up with Matrix and join a group server for gaming, and two of them stopped using it after just a month or two. I only have a single friend who is still using it, and they only use it when the two of us are gaming.

мне как-то доктор из Pain Clinc посоветовал "инновацию" (ну, для Мальты, да): bed of nails! Что по сути — давно знакомый нам аппликатор Кузнецова. Я в Москве купила его себе в Фикспрайсе за 300 р. Если есть желание сделать федивёрс мейнстримом, то нет никакого другого варианта, кроме как каким-то образом сделать его модным у тех, благодаря кому взлетают платформы.
Как это сделать, когда в нынешнем виде почти весь федивёрс — это копия существующих платформ с добавлением щепотки свободы и ровно нулём твоих знакомых среди пользователей?
И иногда ещё, разумеется, МНЕНИЙ, которые ни в коем случае не добавляют ощущения что это просто такой твиттор с противоположным знаком (но в последнем хотя бы сидят твои кореша).

Можно, конечно, пытаться объяснять людям, как это работает и почему это стоит попробовать. Но вся история развития соцсетей показывает, что они растут снизу вверх, а не сверху вниз. И вообще, если надо объяснять, то не надо объяснять. Механика роста соцсетей всегда «это очень круто»-driven и никогда «это очень правильно»-driven.
Иными словами, нужно, чтобы среднестатистический студент или старшеклассник увидел какой-нибудь Мастодон и сказал: это очень круто!
И тогда всё будет.
Но пока я не вижу никакого движения в эту сторону.

I've been looking into how to accomplish this too... because it is a UI/UX problem and I am very bad at designing user interfaces.
Mixing them like so works, although it's hard because then it minimizes the size of topics (since it is just the title.) It means microblog content get a bit of a UI boost due to on screen size.
Limiting the max height of microblog posts and showing a snippet of the threaded content OP is another way, but that makes the page more feed-like and less of a "topic listing", which isn't always the way to go either.
For reference, NodeBB also mixes threads and microblog posts. We do this by generating a title from microblog posts. It's not the best solution either.
Ye. Back when I used Feeder (some Android RSS reader), it was a similar struggle as each feed loads their data differently and I would try to find the least bad of the display modes.
Most of the "microblog" posts I'm seeing are pretty short. I seem to remember the images being way too big, though. I made a custom ublock rule or something to make both the lemmy ones and them equally small thumbnails just big enough to decide if I want to load a full-sized one. It's kept working for a year or something, I had forgotten it was there, but I guess it helps even more now.

Using Mastodon, it's a similar behavior there, and equally mildly annoying. Least bad in that sense imo is Misskey, as when the post is a reply, the one it replies to is partially loaded, though Misskey has so much visual noise it is disorienting in other ways.
Threads appear as articles in the page's source code. Microblog posts appear as blockquote. So you should be able to hide them, at least with Ublock Origin, with domain_from_the_instance##blockquote, e.g. for mine, thebrainbin.org##blockquote.
Do you like the setting to be opt-out so "all" will be the default (like now). Or should we make this combined frontpage an opt-in feature (default will stay "threads" like before)?
I honestly didn't expect that there needed to be a setting for this... But I mainly/only use the "sub" feed, and if you don't want microblogs there, just don't follow people posting them 😅
In my case I do also use "sub" feed. But I still want to see only threads by default. I do use microblogs as well, but if I want to see posts, I click on the Microblog menu.

@Ilka 🌐 politics is reflection of human nature. I suppose human nature evolves much slower than technology. We stay pretty much the same and it takes a lot of effort to change what was forming for literally millions of years.
I mean humans were around literally for millions of years, first "modern humans" appeared around 300000 years ago. Now German Reich phenomenon was in 1933–45 - lasting 12 years and it was 80 years ago. Just a fleeting moment. It is like taking a 18 year old and teaching them something for 20 days then expecting this person to change. It took me longer to learn how to ride a bicycle (well, I am clumsy) 😀
I suppose the pendulum is swinging back as too many people really don't mind. Fascism isn't some alien invention which is hard to introduce. It is a very basic idea - "let us invent ways to justify gettng rid of those we don't like without discussion because we are fed up". It doesn't have to be about race or nation, it can be about gender equality, Internet neutrality or just about anything. As long as someone finds the idea acceptable, they are about to join the horde.
@Randahl Fink there is some progress in this: as we have airplanes and all now it seems more practical to burn down far away villages so there is no trouble on your own border. Not everyone gets this yet but the best players do.
Also it turned out more practical not to exterminate but to enslave. Then not to enslave but colonize, then not colonize but influence and make dependent economically and technologically.
Who knows, maybe the next stage will not include burning down anything and exploitation will be eventually replaced with cultural alignment. Things do improve, they just take a longer time and swing back and forth before stabilizing on some new threshold. Let's see what transition from modern capitalism will look like.
