#TIL В макросы на Си нельзя вставлять // комментарии
Вот тут я делал штуку для выполнения строчек кода в зависимости от установленного значения DEBUG. Вроде всё хорошо, и do {} while(0), как полагается. Но были ошибки компиляции. Долго пытался вдуплить, что не так, посмотрел gcc -E (вывод препроцессора), а там это (скрин 3). То есть вся часть моего define после комментария стёрлась, потому что конструкция вида
a \
b \
c
распознаётся как a b c, в 1 строку. Ну а // это комментарий до конца строки)))
/* */ решает проблему.

Ещё один неприятный момент с этим связанный - что многострочный вызов макроса раскрывается в одну строку, из-за чего трекинг строк внутри для отладки и вывода ошибок невозможен

Браузеры. Чортовы браузеры. Даже стыдно стало, что я когда-то в школе активно агитировала людей на Firefox переходить.
Mozilla, ну чем ты занимаешься...У нас теперь сформировалось правило трёх браузерных дефолтов:
-- На Windows ты первым делом меняешь Microsoft Edge на нормальный браузер
-- На MacOS ты первым делом меняешь Apple Safari на нормальный браузер
-- На Linux и BSD...теперь ты первым делом меняешь Mozilla Firefox на нормальный браузер.
А какие нормальные? Для всех желающих, лично мне понравились следующие браузеры:
-- Zen Browser (На базе Gecko, хороший браузер для детокса из-за его дизайна, моя личная фаворитка и Daily-driver)
-- Vivaldi (На базе Chromium, несвободный, Source-Available, очень кастомизируемый, но жручий)
-- Konqueror (На базе KHTML или KDEWebkit, также может быть и файл-менеджером, хорошо подходит для плазма-фанатов)
-- NetSurf (Независимый движок, легковесный, но на нём работают только лёгкие одностраничники и википедия, обычно именно его юзаю на Thinkpad x200 из-за тлеющего железа)
Ну, и конечно, всегда можно прибегать к старому доброму Tor Browser, только в аккаунты с него не логиньтесь, лучше используйте что-нибудь из списка. А, ещё @kafazen добродушно хостит для етого браузера свои мосты! cryptoschizo.club/obfs4bridge.…Пользуйтесь!

Ну, да? Я об этом написала тоже в скобках :'>, он просто добавляет прикольные фичи поверх, как и вырезает мозилловскую следящую херню, т.е. это как Вивальди от мира Gecko-движков, только полностью опенсорсный и сфокусированный больше на детокс, чем на перегрузку кастомайзом.

А то у меня недавно появилась нездоровая гиперфиксация на том, чтоб прикольные небольшие статейки "портировать" для...хм..скажем так, максимально любительского формата чтения, ибо я их перевожу в .txt формат ручками, чтоб флиппер мог их при помощи txt-viewer'a читать, и у меня бы появилась такая энергоэффективная читалка для тех у кого есть монокль, ээ...да 😁
(Если кто-то вдруг заинтересуется: Книги, скачанные в txt формате с определённых сайтов проверяла, к сожалению txt viewer выдаёт "File is too large" и не разрешает смотреть, поэтому, эх...)

Есть на работе чел, который периодически просит выгрузку по довольно хитрой схеме, что-то типа "список покупателей у которых есть покупки в этом месяце и при этом нет в предыдущем и при этом были покупки за последние N лет". Он присылает макет с указанием этих месяцев, я его заполняю и отсылаю обратно.
Вчера вот приходит с очередной заявкой, просит быстро-срочно. Я выгружаю, а с утра он снова приходит и просит перевыгрузить, опять же срочно, потому что он ошибся в макете и указал не те месяцы.
Я спросонья послушно иду перевыгружать, открываю скрипт... и понимаю что у меня все правильно вообще-то, потому что я давно уже не подставляю месяцы вручную из его макета, а указываю отчетный месяц и рассчитываю остальные относительно него.
Сообщила челу. Он сначала порадовался, что ждать не надо. Потом сообразил - "то есть, если бы я все же захотел месяцы как в макете, вы бы мне прислали ошибочную выгрузку?"
За что ж ты мне такой сообразительный... 
У них там огромная неповоротливая софтина, объединяющая в себе складской и кассовый учёт. Ну так вот, чтобы сформировать отчёт за день они не клацают нужный пункт в ней, а скидывают полный отчёт в Эксель, карррл! И уже в нём, настроив авто фильтры, выясняют сколько и в каком виде они сегодня заработали.
Хотя подход ебань, конечно, но я могу понять сотрудников.

Делают все механически. Они даже не особо понимают для чего именно они эти манипуляции делают. Я уж не говорю, что их рабочие места в минимальной конфигурации и вынуждены тянуть libreoffice, ведь он бесплатный.

Я так с отчётами из детализаций операторов связи работал. Чем пытаться выгрузить как надо, а в случае ошибки или проблем снова натыкивать и ждать, проще один раз выгрузить "вапще всё", сохранить эту простыню и далее манипулировать.

Mastodon is bigger than me, and though the technology we develop on is itself decentralized—with heaps of alternative fediverse projects demonstrating that participation in this ecosystem is possible without our involvement—it benefits our community to ensure that the project itself which so many people have come to love and depend on remains true to its values. There are too many examples of founder egos sabotaging thriving communities, and while I’d like to think myself an exception, I understand why people would prefer better guardrails.
That's nice of him to acknowledge that.

Right, but I mean, the platform was originally designed without them in mind, and there's no real reason why every piece of software needs to have every piece of functionality.. I'm can see why they wouldn't be prioritising it
I suspect I would love it if groups were in mastodon, but I'm not entirely sure it won't backfire in some horrendous way (this is social media after all)

I love and hate how Eugen starts this whole project, leads it into being something truly unique and wonderful that directly challenges some of the most evil and wealthy people on the planet, sets up institutional guardrails to make sure it will not be corrupted by any one individual gone mad with power, gives away his position after 10 years once he's sure the organization is in good hands, and then concludes in reflection that he does not "have the right personality" for running a project like this.
I hope it has not been to hard for him, and that he'll look back at it all as a positive experience in spite of the negative interactions. I don't think any sane person has a personality that is "right" for the kind of abuse public figures receive on the internet. But from the perspective of Mastodon and the Fediverse, it seems pretty clear that he was exactly the right type of personality for the job—including by stepping down when the time felt right.

I was on a non profit board where the founder realized he wasn't the right person for the job after 20 years of growing the org. It finally got to a point that he felt like the growth was beyond what he ever imagined or wanted.
He was, on every metric, very successful. He grew the org from nothing, got millions of dollars in donations, amassed a huge base, and no one would have thought different if he just kept going.
I remember sitting down with him one-on-one and asked him why. He thought about it for a minute and said, "It's time for someone to make it even better."
Looking back, I think I see the exhaustion. To constantly innovate, to push people forward, to push the org, the mission....it was all one person at a time. He reached a point in both age and in life that it just wasn't something he could keep doing.
He loved the mission so much he knew it deserved better.
If that isn't leadership, I don't know what is.

Everybody switched to BlueSky, not Mastodon. So, I feel like this whole project has been a failure, especially in the marketing dept.
BlueSky barely got started in Feb, and people immediately jumped ship from Twitter by the millions. Mastodon started nine years ago, and people hardly know what it is.

Not OP, but...
Finding a single server that fits my interests is the first stumbling block. I follow 30-40 communities here, so I need to pick just one focus, which kinda sucks, TBF.
So I picked one, It was too quiet, but it was a start, then I started looking for interesting people. Hardly anyone famous, the few that I did find ended up being the ones that turned out to be creeps in the news, even assuming they were real accounts, which is probably a generous assumption. When I finally found the few people I wanted to follow, they gradually disappeared over time to Bluesky.
WIth their community lines being split per server and no discovery other than randomly finding someone with your tastes while bebopping around on your server. It wasn't a good experience.

The organization has already transitioned to a nonprofit in the U.S. but is still working to set up a nonprofit in Belgium, or an AISBL, to replace the German entity, which lost its nonprofit status last year. Once established, the Belgian nonprofit will be the future home of the organization. In the meantime, the U.S.-based 501(c)(3) c nonprofit will own the trademark and other assets.

People need to realize that open source projects don't create billionaires. In fact, they actually block billionaires from forming.
Tech deci-millionaires get rich by creating a moat around something, then put a toll booth at the drawbridge. Tech billionaires do that but make sure to enclose something essential they have a monopoly on within the moat, and then capture any and all regulators who might try to interfere. Open Source software either makes it illegal to build a moat or allows anybody who's interested to build their own drawbridge. It's orders of magnitude harder to get rich with open source or free software. You basically have to put up a toll booth that's fully optional and somehow still get people to pay.
We should all thank #JohnMastodon for his selfless acts, both starting Mastodon but also now knowing when to step down.

Ende 1996 habe ich mich privat von Winzigweich getrennt und habe es nicht eine Minute bereut. Als die Suchmaschine DuckDuckGo 2008 auf den Markt kam landete auch Chuuchel da wo es hingehört, nämlich in der Mülltonne. Zu sogenannten sozialen Medien von Meta und C(l)o. hab ich nie ein Verhältnis gehabt. Ich habe mich auch nie deswegen sozial abgehängt gefühlt. Im Prinzip das analoge Leben weiter gelebt. Erst als ich gegen 2017 auf die Software Freedombox, wegen Suche nach einem häuslichen Backupserver, stieß, lernte ich auch das Fediverse kennen, daß ganz wegen FOSS nach meinem Geschmack war. Erstes Smartphone mit Android wurde so gut es ging entchoochelt. Das zweite ohne Choochel gekauft. Ich verabscheue das mit G zu schreiben.

Es geht also in sehr vielen Fällen ohne #bigtech zu leben und zu arbeiten. Aber leider nicht in allen Fällen, da manchmal Software nicht für Betriebssysteme außerhalb M$ oder IOS existiert. Vielleicht würde sich das ja ändern wenn immer mehr Menschen in der EU auf Unixoide FOSS Betriebssysteme umsteigen. Der Markt in der EU ist ja nicht der kleinste. Wenn Wir in der EU das konsequent durchziehen, werden andere Staaten auf der ganzen Welt uns folgen.

Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #Mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

And thank you for making the hard decision to step down and pass the torch. I have seen too many organizations hobbled by the Founder's Syndrome, it is very good to see Mastodon is taking steps to avoid that.
As you step away somewhat, I just want to say this:
As a senior citizen, a non-tech person, someone who through the years opened various social media accounts then feeling dissatisfied for the many reasons most are here, closed each one and ultimately decided to stay off of social media platforms, I am thankful I found Mastodon.
This space, Mastodon, the fediverse, is unique because of diversity --people of differing opinions, ways of life, genders, education levels, cultures, geographical location and so on...and sure little conflicts arise, often heated discussions, once in a while hate slips in and moderators take action...but overall I think the concept behind Mastodon/Fediverse is what unites everyone.
I think most people I know here would agree, our time here is well spent because we learn from each other.
You facilitated this, the creation of a unique place, and for that this old person sends a big thank you.

Mastodon is a truly wonderful - and exceptionally important - creation. Traditional investors and business folk might lament lack of (even) faster growth, and urge the raising of much more capital to 'leverage' what you and the team have built so far.
But, as you obviously know, that type of investment sows the seeds of enshittification.

I think this is a great step. Not because you did bad work, to the contrary! You did amazing work but at some point it feels inevitable that one burns out with such responsibility and things take a turn for the worse. Even with best and friendliest of people. Stepping down before that happens is a humbling move.

You are correct that #Mastodon and #Fediverse success has lifted a huge responsibility to "sanitize" what is the internet today.
Can I ask if you personally have a desire to advocate for a foundation type of organization that will work as a Non Government organization and lend your expirience and all the people who have worked around the Fediverse and FOSS, in order to create better legislation? Have you spoke about this before and I missed it?
